As the Education Program Manager at YCC, Yasamin Jahani Kia’s journey here was driven by a profound passion for environmental justice and climate change advocacy. With a concentration in Environmental Engineering, she has delved deep into the intricate challenges our society faces today, specifically members of marginalized communities and she firmly believes in the imperative of empowering our youth with knowledge and equipping them to champion meaningful change. She has had the privilege of curating a series of workshops as part of an engineering leadership program, designed to instill the values of lifelong learning essential for personal and professional development. These workshops have delved into crucial topics including social justice and Indigenous Knowledge, reflecting her commitment to broader societal and global perspectives. Yasamin is originally from Iran and is pursuing a degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada. As an international student she’s taken it upon herself to forge connections and foster a supportive community for those sharing similar backgrounds. Yasamin has dedicated her efforts to cultivating an environment where individuals can find solace and solidarity. In her studies, she has experience working with a team of engineers to improve stormwater infrastructure design through the use of Low Impact Development (LID), adhering to the standards set by the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Through their concerted efforts, they aimed not only to mitigate immediate risks but also to contribute to the resilience of communities in the face of climate-induced challenges. Yasamin is striving to work in Future Energy, and she aims to utilize her knowledge and resources to create educational programs here at YCC.
